Samsung prepares to rival Apple's Vision Pro with a new XR headset in 2024

16/11/2023

The tech world is in an uproar with the potential announcement of Samsung's new XR headset, called 'Infinite'. With the Apple Vision Pro already generating a lot of enthusiasm, Samsung is aiming to compete by launching its own headset, which could be unveiled alongside the much-anticipated Galaxy Z Flip 6 in 2024.

A strategic partnership with Google and Qualcomm

Samsung has already confirmed its partnership with Google and Qualcomm to develop an extended reality (XR) headset, combining virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR). Although the launch date has not been officially announced, Korean media outlet JoongAng claims that the "Infinite" headset should be launched by the end of 2024.

First unveiling expected at Unpacked event

JoongAng's report states that Samsung's XR headset, codenamed 'Infinite', will be produced in December next year and is likely to be unveiled at an Unpacked event, expected in the second half of 2024. This information matches rumours of the launch of the Galaxy Z Flip 6.

According to reports, Samsung is taking a cautious approach by initially limiting production of the device to 30,000 units. This decision is intended to gauge market reception and industry developments post-launch.

Fierce Competition in the XR Market

Samsung is preparing to compete with major contenders such as Meta (with the Quest 3) and Apple (with the Vision Pro) in the XR headset market. The report does not indicate the expected launch price, but suggests that Samsung is looking to engage in a "fierce battle for leadership" in the XR space. That ambition could mean a high-end headset with a matching price tag.

According to reports, Samsung's 'Infinite' XR headset will offer a virtual and augmented reality experience to users of the Galaxy range and beyond. Production of the device's lens will be handled by Samsung Display, with a particular focus on the OLED display, identical to the one Apple uses.

Samsung's background in XR headsets

Samsung's last move into the headset business was with the Gear VR, which was discontinued in 2017 after the split with Oculus (now known as Meta Quest). The new 'Infinite' thus aims to mark Samsung's return to the XR headset scene.

With the potential launch of the 'Infinite' headset in 2024, Samsung is gearing up to compete seriously in the rapidly expanding XR headset market. Competing with giants such as Meta and Apple promises an exciting battle for leadership in the XR arena, leaving consumers eager to discover the next breakthroughs in extended reality.
